The European Union (EU) has lifted the asset freeze on the Zimbabwe Defence Industries (ZDI), the final entity remaining on its sanctions list.

Initially imposed in 2002 after then-President Robert Mugabe expelled the EU’s chief election observer, the sanctions have been gradually eased over the years. The EU will continue to maintain an arms embargo and restrictions on equipment that could be used for internal repression, according to a statement released on Tuesday.

While no entities are currently under EU sanctions, the EU has extended its 2011 non-binding Council Decision for another year. This framework allows the bloc to impose new sanctions on Zimbabwean entities or individuals over human rights issues if necessary. The latest decision follows the EU’s routine annual review of sanctions on Zimbabwe, with the next review set for 20 February 2026.

“The EU continues to closely follow developments in Zimbabwe, with particular attention to the human rights situation, and recalls its readiness to adapt the whole range of its policies accordingly,” the bloc stated.

There are no trade restrictions between the EU and Zimbabwe, and the EU does not channel development aid through the Government.
