Tensions flared at Nyaradzo Funeral Parlour in Bulawayo yesterday as the family of Detective Constable Cassandra Hove demanded answers following her tragic death during a shooting incident in Pumula South last Thursday. The funeral service, initially scheduled for 10am, was postponed after emotional confrontations between the family and police officers present.

Hove, who sustained gunshot wounds during an exchange of fire with armed robbers, was pronounced dead upon arrival at a private clinic. However, her family disputes the police’s account, alleging that she was shot by a fellow officer.

“There is something suspicious about this. Why was the post-mortem conducted without our consent? Why were bereavement funds collected without our knowledge? We demand answers,” said a family member.

The family also questioned why they were notified hours after Hove’s death and why her personal belongings, including mobile phones and title deeds, were taken by the police.

Ryan Gambinga, a family spokesperson, revealed that Hove had recently secured a scholarship to study forensic investigations in Russia.

“This is a devastating loss. We demand a thorough and transparent investigation to uncover the truth and ensure justice is served,” said Gambinga.

Following a closed-door meeting with senior police officials, the family agreed to proceed with the funeral after receiving assurances of a full investigation. Hove will be buried today in her rural home in Mberengwa.
