Gwanda Woman Sentenced for Drug Possession

The Gwanda Magistrates Court has sentenced Debra Nyathi (42) of Magedleni Village, Gwanda, to 210 hours of community service for unlawful possession of contraband.
On 12th February 2025, law enforcement intercepted a bus travelling from South Africa along the Beitbridge-Bulawayo road. During a routine search, the team discovered two sacks containing 599 bottles of Broncleer cough syrup. Nyathi, identified as the owner, admitted to owning the contraband and was subsequently arrested.
The recovered drugs were sent for expert analysis at Gwanda Hospital, where a Pharmacist Affidavit was issued. Nyathi was sentenced to 12 months in prison, with 6 months suspended on condition of completing 210 hours of community service at Magedleni Primary School. The recovered cough syrups were forfeited to the state for destruction.
