Blessing Muzarabani’s seven-wicket haul set the stage for a commanding performance by Zimbabwe on the opening day against Ireland in Bulawayo.

Ireland were bowled out for 260, thanks to Muzarabani’s impressive figures of 7 for 58, the second-best by a Zimbabwean bowler. His early strikes had Ireland reeling at 31 for 5, but a resilient 127-run partnership between Andy McBrine and Mark Adair lifted the visitors to a respectable total.

Zimbabwe, in reply, reached 72 for 1 at stumps, trailing by 188 runs. Ben Curran was the only casualty, falling early, while Takudzwanashe Kaitano and Nick Welch guided the hosts to a solid start.

The day began under clear skies, but the pitch’s unpredictable nature soon became evident. Peter Moor was the first to go, dragging a delivery onto his stumps. Curtis Campher and Andy Balbirnie followed soon after, falling to the deceptive bounce and pace.

Muzarabani’s best delivery came against Harry Tector, who edged a seaming ball to slip. Paul Stirling also fell to a sharp, rising delivery, leaving Ireland in deep trouble.

Tucker’s aggressive intent brought some respite, but he was dismissed chopping onto his stumps off Trevor Gwandu. Adair took over the mantle, scoring freely to bring up a rapid fifty.

After lunch, Zimbabwe’s bowlers struggled to maintain control as the pitch eased. Adair capitalised on this, only to fall to a loose delivery from Muzarabani. Despite McBrine’s efforts to farm the strike, Ireland’s innings ended at 260, with McBrine stranded on 90.

Zimbabwe’s response was steady, with Kaitano and Welch seeing off the new ball to end the day in a strong position.
