President Cyril Ramaphosa, during his State of the Nation Address, delivered a strong message to South Africa’s detractors, asserting that the nation will not be bullied.
He emphasised South Africa’s capability to navigate the ever-changing global landscape, marked by rising nationalism, protectionism, and narrow interests.
“This is the world that we, a developing economy, must now navigate. But we are not daunted to navigate our path through this world that constantly changes,” Ramaphosa stated. “We will not be deterred. We are a resilient people and we will not be bullied.”
Ramaphosa’s resolute message, which was met with applause in the National Assembly, followed recent criticism from US and Rwandan leaders. Rwandan President Paul Kagame, along with government officials, criticised the presence of South African troops in the eastern DRC, alleging financial interests rather than peacekeeping motives. Kagame also accused Ramaphosa of misrepresenting their telephone conversation, where Ramaphosa purportedly warned that continued attacks on South African troops would be seen as a declaration of war.
US President Donald Trump voiced concerns over South Africa’s Expropriation Act, claiming the country was seizing private properties.
Ramaphosa, reflecting on South Africa’s resilience, said, “We have survived apartheid, which sought to dehumanise our people. We will stand together and speak with one voice in defence of our national interests, our sovereignty, and our constitutional democracy.”
He reiterated South Africa’s commitment to peace, justice, equality, and solidarity. “We stand for a non-racial future and we stand for democracy and tolerance as well as compassion. We stand for equal rights for women and people living with disabilities and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. We stand for our shared humanity, not for the survival of the fittest,” he added.
Ramaphosa’s comments came after a telephonic conversation with Trump’s right-hand man, Elon Musk, to clarify their view on South Africa’s situation.
