Southern African Development Community (SADC) Chairperson Emmerson Mnangagwa marked Southern Africa Liberation Day on 23rd March 2025 by honouring the sacrifices of the region’s freedom fighters. The day, celebrated annually, pays tribute to those who fought for independence, democracy, and sovereignty across Southern Africa.

In a statement, Mnangagwa urged citizens to remain vigilant against emerging threats to their hard-won independence. “We must continue to stand in solidarity against the imposition of illegal sanctions, coercive measures, and any actions that undermine our sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.

Mnangagwa also expressed solidarity with the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, emphasising that Africa’s freedom remains incomplete while Western Sahara is still under occupation. “Africa will not be free until Western Sahara is liberated, free, and independent,” he declared.

The SADC Chairperson highlighted the need for lasting peace in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where ongoing conflicts threaten regional stability. “The time to ‘silence the guns’, de-escalate tensions, and engage in dialogue for long-lasting peace in the DRC is now,” Mnangagwa stated. He reiterated SADC’s commitment to achieving the aspirations outlined in the SADC Constitutive Act and Vision 2050.

Mnangagwa also addressed the impact of climate change on the region, calling for enhanced early warning systems and resilience-building measures. “Our region has been greatly affected by recurring climate-induced disasters, leading to severe droughts and threatening food security. We must leverage science, technology, and innovation to mitigate these challenges,” he said.

Southern Africa Liberation Day serves as a reminder of the region’s shared history and collective aspirations for peace, development, and unity. Mnangagwa’s message underscored the importance of solidarity in addressing contemporary challenges, from political instability to environmental crises.
