Starlink has begun expanding capacity in previously sold-out areas in Zimbabwe. Bulawayo, where some areas sold out last November, has now completely opened up. Several towns surrounding Harare, which were also sold out, have started to open up as well.

Capacity in Harare and parts of Bulawayo ran out just weeks after Starlink went live in Zimbabwe last year. In Harare, the sold-out area quickly extended to cover areas more than 100km from the city, including Chegutu and Macheke. This sold-out area is now reducing, with both Chegutu and Macheke having available capacity. Other previously sold-out areas, such as Mvurwi, also now have capacity.

The congestion has been largely attributed to informal resellers who bought multiple kits to resell them locally at a profit to people unable to purchase online for various reasons. When capacity filled up, the secondary market for Starlink kits thrived on platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp.

The additional capacity is therefore welcome news for many.

It’s not just Zimbabwe benefiting from this expansion. Capacity has also opened up in other countries since mid-February, such as Mozambique and Zambia. The expectation is that this trend will continue, and hopefully, sold-out areas will become a thing of the past.
