Two suspects have been arrested in connection with a burglary at Spellbound Electronics in Harare, where over US$10,000 worth of cellphones were stolen. Berenic Njinga, a caretaker, and Oniel Chirisa, a cellphone repair technician, appeared before Harare magistrate Isheanesu Matova, charged with unlawful entry.
The incident occurred on 28th December when the duo allegedly broke into the shop by removing a metal plate at the first-floor entrance. They stole 55 cellphones from the display counter, which were later recovered from various buyers across Harare.
Alfred Chikonyora, an employee at Spellbound Electronics, discovered the theft the following day and reported it to the police. Investigations led to the arrest of Njinga in Sotherton, where a Redmi Note 13 Pro was recovered. Njinga then implicated Chirisa, who was arrested at Gulf Complex.
Njinga led police to the recovery of additional stolen phones, including a Nokla C10 from his mother, a Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 from his wife, and a ZTE Blade TNE from another associate. Six other phones were recovered from his cousin. The suspects reportedly sold some of the stolen items to individuals including Clifford Magunje, Vimbai Mapondera, and Tafadzwa Mapuranga.
So far, property worth US$4,812 has been recovered. The case highlights the growing issue of burglaries targeting tech businesses in Harare, with thieves often reselling stolen goods through informal networks.
