Tragic Incident in Chiwaridzo: Husband Accused of Murder

Bindura, Zimbabwe – On the evening of 12 February 2025, a tragic incident unfolded in Woodbrooke, Bindura, resulting in the death of Grace Chareka, a 34-year-old resident. The accused, her husband Justice Pondani, is facing charges of murder under Section 47(1)(A)(B) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.

Circumstances of the Incident

According to the memorandum issued by Officer Commanding Police (Mash Central Province), the events transpired around 2100 hours when Justice Pondani arrived home inebriated. He entered the room where his wife, their four children, and a visitor, Dougie NFPK from the Makusha mining area, were seated on the bed. Suspecting Dougie NFPK to be Grace Chareka’s boyfriend, Pondani violently assaulted his wife, slapping her, kicking her repeatedly, and pushing her head against the wall multiple times.

Dougie NFPK managed to escape from the room. Sheila Pondani, the accused’s nine-year-old daughter, also fled and sought help from a family friend, Andrew Fanuel. However, upon arriving at the Pondani residence, Fanuel was too fearful to intervene due to the accused’s violent behaviour. He stood at a distance and pleaded with Pondani to stop the assault.

Pondani eventually exited the house and claimed to have found his wife with her boyfriend. He then informed Fanuel of his intent to leave for the Simoona area and departed. Fanuel returned home to sleep but was later awakened by Lucy Chari, who alerted him to the sight of Grace Chareka lying lifeless at the door.

The duo noticed Pondani asleep in a room under construction at Fanuel’s house. Fanuel, along with neighbours and the informant Octavious Tinashe Ruzvidzo, apprehended the accused. Upon investigating the scene, they found Grace Chareka had succumbed to her injuries, with significant head trauma and bleeding from her nose, mouth, and head.

Police Actions and Investigations

A report was made to ZRP Chiwaridzo, whose officers attended the scene and detained the accused. The body of Grace Chareka remains under guard by ZRP Chiwaridzo details. Investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
