The Trump administration has decided to cease the supply of lifesaving drugs for HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis, as well as medical supplies for newborns in countries supported by USAID, according to a memo obtained by Reuters.
On Tuesday, contractors working with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) received notices to halt their work immediately. This is part of a broader freeze on U.S. aid that began when Trump took office on January 20, while programmes are being reviewed.
One memo was sent to Chemonics, a major U.S. consulting firm that helps supply medicines worldwide. The memo affects their work on HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, contraception, and maternal and child health supplies.
Atul Gawande, who recently left his position as head of global health at USAID, described the situation as “catastrophic.” He noted that many people living with HIV depend on donated drug supplies, which are now at risk. Gawande warned that interruptions in treatment could lead to more illness and the spread of drug-resistant viruses.

Other organisations also received notices preventing them from delivering medicines or opening clinics funded by the U.S., affecting millions of children with HIV.
Trump ordered a 90-day pause in foreign aid on his first day in office to review its effectiveness and alignment with U.S. policy. Additionally, about 60 senior USAID officials have been put on leave.
These actions could jeopardise billions of dollars in essential aid, as the U.S. is the world’s largest donor, providing $72 billion in assistance in 2023 and accounting for 42% of all humanitarian aid tracked by the United Nations for 2024.
