Trump Shuts Down Voice of America, Staff Put On Leave

The Trump administration has placed over 1,300 Voice of America (VOA) staff on leave and halted funding for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) and Radio Free Asia (RFA), sparking fears of reduced access to independent news in authoritarian regions. The move follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump to shrink several federal agencies, including the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which oversees VOA.

VOA Director Michael Abramowitz called the decision “devastating,” stating:

“For the first time in 83 years, Voice of America is being silenced. This undermines our role in promoting democracy and countering propaganda worldwide.”

The cuts affect broadcasts in nearly 50 languages, including services targeting Russia, China, and North Korea. RFE/RL, declared “undesirable” by Moscow, and RFA, critical for coverage of Beijing and Pyongyang, face immediate defunding. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský noted:

“These outlets are a lifeline for millions in repressive regimes. Their loss risks leaving populations without truthful reporting.”

Kari Lake, Trump’s nominee to lead USAGM, labelled the agency “rotten” and vowed to minimise its operations. Critics, including Reporters Without Borders, warn the cuts “threaten global press freedom” and reward authoritarian governments.

The decision aligns with broader efforts by Trump ally Elon Musk to reduce federal spending, though opponents argue it weakens US influence.

For communities in Mashonaland Central and other remote areas in the country reliant on Studio 7 broadcasts, the move is a major blow in accessing information.
