The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) has reported that water flows are increasing at its monitoring stations on the Zambezi River due to substantial rainfall, yet they remain significantly lower than during the same period in 2024.

In an update on the water situation in the Kariba Catchment, the ZRA stated that water levels are gradually rising at both the Chavuma and Victoria Falls gauging stations. According to the ZRA:

“This improvement is attributed to the recent dissipation of the El Niño-induced drought, which had caused significant moisture loss from both the ground and the atmosphere. Consequently, much of the rainfall is initially being absorbed into the ground before contributing to runoff. However, the situation is anticipated to improve by mid-February 2025, with increased rainfall activity projected in both the lower and upper catchments.”

The ZRA reported that the river flows at the Chavuma Gauging Station in 2025 are considerably lower compared to the same dates in 2024. For example, the recorded flows on January 13, 20, 27, and February 3, 2025, were 180, 186, 197, and 365 cubic meters per second (m³/s), respectively. In contrast, the flows on the same dates in 2024 were much higher at 489, 527, 516, and 468 m³/s.

Similarly, at the Victoria Falls Gauging Station, water flows are slowly increasing due to upstream rainfall and precipitation around the Victoria Falls area. In 2025, the recorded flows on January 13, 20, 27, and February 3 were 378, 458, 548, and 535 m³/s, respectively. Comparatively, the flows on the same dates in 2024 were significantly higher at 579, 660, 698, and 717 m³/s.
