Zimbabwe is among 43 countries listed in a draft US travel ban proposal under consideration by President Donald Trump’s administration, which aims to impose stricter immigration controls. The plan, reported by The New York Times, categorises nations into three tiers, with Zimbabwe placed in the “yellow” category, giving it 60 days to address US concerns over visa vetting processes.
The draft lists 11 “red” countries facing total travel bans, including Afghanistan, Iran, and Syria, while 10 “orange” nations like Russia and Pakistan would see sharp visa restrictions. Zimbabwe joins 21 others, such as Angola and Malawi, in the “yellow” tier, where failure to resolve issues like inadequate passport security or data-sharing could lead to tougher sanctions.
A State Department spokesperson stated:
“We are committed to protecting national security through rigorous visa vetting, as ordered by President Trump.”
The proposal, still under review, revives Trump’s first-term focus on immigration limits. Critics argue the bans disproportionately target Muslim-majority and low-income nations, though inclusions like Bhutan and Venezuela complicate this pattern. Zimbabwe’s inclusion follows longstanding US concerns about governance and corruption, though no specific rationale was provided.
The Trump administration has not clarified whether existing visas or green cards would be revoked, but recent cancellations for activists, like a Syrian student’s residency, signal stricter enforcement.
