12 Percent of the Mash Central Population Do Not Relate to Any Religion – Zimstat
More than 100 000 people in Mashonaland Central province are not associated with any religion according to the recent 2022 Population and Housing Census results.
The results however show that Christianity is the most common religion in the province encompassing 77, 7 percent of the provincial population of 1 384 891 (681 246 males and 703 645 females).
The report says 12, 1 percent of the provincial population does not relate to any religion.
“In relation to religion and Christianity, it says around 53 percent of Christians in the province belong to the apostolic sect.”
The results were disseminated by Perfect Makumbe the Demographic Analysis Manager at Zimstat last Monday.
The census results also showed that of the more than one million people in the province, 14 437 were born outside the country, 8 909 in Mozambique.
It also shows that around 23,050 locals had migrated to other countries, 17 121 to South Africa, 1432 to Mozambique and 747 to the United Kingdom since the last census.
The report goes on to say in terms of literacy, the provincial literacy rate is at 91 percent, with males at 90 and females at 96.2 percent.
The census considered anyone who went beyond Grade Three as literate.
It also touched on marriages saying about 59,9 percent of women above 15 years were married while 33.9 percent had never done so.
Most of the marriages that were recorded in the census were civil and both registered and unregistered customary marriages.
The report went on to note that the province’s sex ratio stood at 97 males per 100 females. It goes on to say of the total population in the province, 99,7 are Zimbabweans while only 0.3 percent are from other countries, mainly Mozambique.
It further states that the province has 337,778 private households, 0,1 percent child-headed.
Meanwhile, Zimstat has been urged to change its benchmark in terms of the age group it is starting to look at marriages.
Child rights activists have called to start measuring marriage prevalence from 18 years which is the marriage age in Zimbabwe and not from 15.
