A horrific accident near Twin Lodges along Mt Darwin road in Bindura yesterday evening (1600hrs) claimed the lives of five young girls, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
According to a police report, Washington Timburwa (51), a member of the Zimbabwe National Army, was driving a silver Nissan Primera with one passenger when he lost control of the vehicle, hitting six pedestrians. “Upon approaching 90km peg on the said road, he failed to keep proper control of the vehicle and veered off to the left side of the road and swerved to the right side where he went on to hit 6 pedestrians who were walking along the said road due south,” the report states.
The vehicle overturned several times before landing on its roof. Three of the pedestrians, all young girls from Bindura, died on the spot. Two others succumbed to their injuries upon admission to Bindura Hospital. A sixth pedestrian, also a young girl from Manhenga, remains in critical condition at Bindura Hospital—the passenger, Nyasha Ngwerume (22), sustained minor injuries and is also admitted.
While the police report identifies Timburwa as the driver, witnesses at the scene allege that Ngwerume was actually behind the wheel and that the car was speeding. These claims contradict the police report, which may rule out speeding as the sole cause of the accident.
Investigations are ongoing, and Timburwa is currently facing charges of culpable homicide. This tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers of reckless driving and the devastating consequences it can have. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims.
