A 49-year-old Air Zimbabwe employee has appeared in court charged with stealing jet fuel from a Boeing 737.

Jacob Mutemeri, who is stationed at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, was granted US$150 (£118) bail and is due to appear in court again on 23 January 2025.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred in November 2024 when an Air Zimbabwe Boeing 737, known as “Mbuya Nehanda,” arrived from Botswana with a fuel leak and in need of servicing.

The plane, which had 6.3 tonnes of fuel on board, was parked at the Air Zimbabwe Engine Run Section awaiting maintenance.
Mutemeri allegedly took advantage of the situation and began draining fuel from the plane every night between 15 and 22 November.

He allegedly used an Air Zimbabwe Nissan Navara to access the hangar where the plane was parked and used containers to siphon off the fuel.

The theft was discovered on 22 November during maintenance work on the aircraft, leading to Mutemeri’s arrest.

He faces charges of theft and will appear in court again next month.
