Harare – Another suspect linked to the robbery of Meru Service Station, where US$129,000 was stolen, has been taken into custody.
Kudakwashe Dzapasi, believed to have been the getaway driver, made an appearance before regional magistrate Tilda Mazhande but was not asked to enter a plea.
Dzapasi now joins six other alleged accomplices – Willard Chinorukwa, Enerst Manzunzu, Borniface Masora, Simbarashe Vheremu, Munyaradzi Gurure, and Mike Matumba – who remain in custody awaiting trial.
According to reports, the gang hid the stolen money in various places, including a garden, a wardrobe, and other locations. It is alleged that one of the suspects used part of the stolen money to purchase a 48-inch television, a kitchen unit, mobile phone, utensils, and groceries.
The court heard that on Monday of last week, the gang conspired to rob Meru Service Station. They armed themselves with a 9mm Star pistol and machetes before heading to the service station in a silver Nissan AD Van.
The robbers reportedly targeted the company’s cashier, Hillary Hufa, who was collecting cash from the Mbare, Kuwadzana, and Whitehouse branches. As Hufa approached his vehicle, they disarmed Zindoga Jiri, a Fawcett Security guard on duty, and seized his .38 Revolver.
They then threatened Hufa at gunpoint and demanded he surrender a satchel containing US$129,111 in cash. The gang fled the scene in their getaway vehicle.
Detectives from CID Homicide were tipped off about Chinorukwa’s involvement and arrested him at his house in Chitungwiza, shooting him in the leg during his attempt to flee.
The police recovered US$7,760 hidden in Chinorukwa’s garden. He later led them to arrest Manzunzu in Norton, where US$7,500 was recovered from his bedroom.
Further arrests followed, with detectives recovering:
- US$1,980 from Masora, hidden in a wardrobe, along with items purchased using the stolen cash
- US$3,000 from Vheremu’s house
- US$1,260 from Gurure
- US$1,900 from Matumba
All suspects remain in custody as investigations continue. Police are commended for their swift action in apprehending those involved in the crime.
