Bikita RDC CEO Dies After Allegations of Corruption
Peter Chibhi, CEO of Bikita Rural District Council, passed away early Monday morning after reportedly consuming poison. The news comes amidst ongoing investigations into alleged corruption at the council.
Chibhi was initially admitted to Silveira Mission Hospital on Saturday and later transferred to Masvingo Provincial Hospital, where he died around 3 am. His death was confirmed by Bikita RDC chairperson Thomas Mataga.
The incident follows the dispatch of a team of investigators by Minister of Local Government Winston Chitando on Tuesday. These investigators were tasked with looking into various allegations of corruption within the Bikita RDC. It is understood that there was also pressure on councillors to pass a vote of no confidence in Chibhi.
Adding to the controversy, last year Chibhi reportedly procured six Toyota GD6 vehicles using a council loan. These vehicles were then registered in the names of individual managers, raising concerns about potential misuse of funds.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Chibhi’s death. The ongoing corruption investigation is also expected to continue.
