Breaking News: Madzibaba Ishmael Arrested, Graveyards Found at Compound

Madzibaba Ishmael Chokurongerwa has been arrested after authorities raided his compound in Nyabira believed to be a cult. Shallow graves were also discovered in a search ensuing the raid.

According to reports, “scores of police officers, armed with guns, tear smoke and accompanied by sniffer dogs” stormed the compound early yesterday morning, leading to Madzibaba Ishmael’s arrest.

Over 1,000 people reside in the compound, which has been described as a place where “the majority of the people are being abused”.

Residents claimed the compound was their “Promised Land” when woken up at 4 am by the police raid. Officials from various government departments, including Social Welfare, accompanied the police.

A Cause for Concern: Children Without Education and Birth Certificates

A significant finding involved the children at the compound. “Virtually all the children said they did not have birth certificates and did not go to school because they were not allowed to do so.” This raises concerns about potential indoctrination and isolation from mainstream society.

Contrasting Reports: Abuse Allegations and Denials

While some reports allege abuse, “Health, Victim Friendly Unit and Social Welfare officials… interviewed different women and children” and “all of them said they were not aware of such abuse and they have never been subjected to any form of abuse.”

Followers Defend Their Leader

“Most of Madzibaba Ishmael’s followers dismissed concerns that they were living in captivity” and claimed to be there willingly.

Madzibaba Ishmael’s Past and Statements

It’s important to note that Madzibaba Ishmael is an ex-convict. During the raid, he assured officers of peace and requested they disarm “for the children’s sake.” He denied past accusations of violence against police, stating, “Our angels are the ones who fought some of your officers, it was not us.” He also emphasized his commitment to peace and offered hospitality to the officers.

A Disturbing Discovery

The team reportedly discovered “shallow graves dug around an anthill” in a cemetery on the compound.

Madzibaba Ishmael’s Detention

He claimed ignorance of women’s and children’s rights. He was arrested alongside four other church members and detained at Nyabira Police Station before being transferred to Norton Police Station.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned for further updates.
