Building Collapse in Harare CBD Feared to Cause Deaths

Harare, Zimbabwe – April 6, 2024 – A building collapse in Harare’s Central Business District (CBD) this afternoon is feared to have caused multiple fatalities. The incident occurred at the corner of Chinhoyi and Bank Streets after a heavy hailstorm damaged the structure.

Emergency services were called to the scene and a search and rescue operation is currently underway. The exact number of casualties remains unclear, with initial reports suggesting at least four deaths. Several vehicles parked in the vicinity were also damaged by falling debris.

The collapse highlights concerns about the safety of ageing buildings in Harare’s CBD. Many structures in the downtown area have fallen into disrepair and lack necessary renovations. This, coupled with the increasing congestion caused by informal traders, has raised safety concerns for some time.

The cause of the building collapse is still under investigation. However, heavy rains accompanied by hail are believed to have played a role. The City of Harare has not yet commented on the incident.

This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
