Castle Lager Premier Soccer League: Hwange Edges Yadah 1-0 in Season Opener as Billiat Makes Debut

Yadah FC’s highly anticipated signing Khama Billiat entered the field in the 75th minute of their Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season opener against Hwange FC, but his efforts couldn’t prevent his team from falling short. Hwange secured a narrow 1-0 victory at the Colliery Stadium on Sunday, thanks to a first-half goal from Gift Mbweti.

The match marked Billiat’s long-awaited return to the domestic league after an eight-month absence. While his late introduction sparked hope for an equalizer, Yadah ultimately fell short despite creating chances in the second half.

Hwange Claims Early Lead

Hwange took control early in the game, capitalizing on a defensive error from Yadah in the 17th minute. A swift counter-attack saw Mbweti, a former FC Platinum player returning to Hwange, capitalize on a poor clearance and chip the ball past Yadah’s goalkeeper Marshall Takarinda.

The home side dominated the first half, with Takarinda making several crucial saves to prevent a wider deficit for Yadah. Hwange strikers missed a number of opportunities, while Takarinda denied Marceline Mlilo on three occasions from close range.

Yadah Fights Back But Falls Short

The second half saw a shift in momentum as Yadah pushed for an equalizer. The introduction of Vincent Sango for Munashe Chigwerewe bolstered their attack, but they couldn’t find the back of the net. Billiat, brought on as a substitute, nearly snatched a dramatic late goal, but his effort hit the upright.

Praise for New Acquisitions

Hwange coach Obert Moyo commended his players, particularly the new signings, for their performance. “The boys did well and everything went according to plan,” said Moyo. “It’s good to have such a result with some new young players in the mix.”

Despite the defeat, Yadah coach Tinashe Ruzive acknowledged the positive impact of Billiat’s presence. “He brings stability and experience in the team and he will bring in lots of positives going forward,” he said.
