Amidst leadership turmoil within the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Sengezo Tshabangu, the party’s self-proclaimed interim secretary general, asserted his faction’s control on Tuesday following his swearing-in as a Matabeleland North senator.
Tshabangu, a controversial figure within the opposition due to his role in initiating recalls of elected CCC legislators, emphasized the party’s continued existence despite former leader Nelson Chamisa’s resignation earlier this year.
“The party is very much alive,” Tshabangu declared to journalists after taking his oath. “That’s why I’m still here, why my colleagues are here, and why we were sworn in today. We are in control of this movement and will continue discharging our duties.”
The CCC faces a period of uncertainty following Chamisa’s departure, with three separate factions vying for leadership. Tshabangu urged remaining CCC legislators to join his faction.
“Time is running out for them,” he stated. “They need to join the movement. We are the alternative, and we need to hold the government accountable.”
Sworn in alongside seven other loyalists who took over seats vacated by recalled members of parliament, Tshabangu denied accusations of being a Zanu PF agent. He expressed enthusiasm for his new role.
“It’s a great feeling,” Tshabangu said. “I’m happy for the people of Zimbabwe and hope to represent them well. This is a new chapter for Zimbabwean politics.”
