Zimbabwean opposition politician Sengezo Tshabangu, who claims to be the interim secretary general of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has ordered the recall of five CCC senators from Parliament.
The affected senators are:
- Jameson Timba (Harare)
- Webster Maonera (Harare)
- Vongai Tome (Harare)
- Editor Matamisa (Mashonaland West)
- Ralph T. Magunje (Mashonaland West)
Tshabangu ordered the recalls in a letter to Senate President Mabel Chinomona. He claimed that the senators had ceased to be members of the CCC.
The CCC has dismissed Tshabangu as an imposter and has accused him of stealing and abusing the party’s intellectual property. The party has also filed a criminal report against Tshabangu with the police.
Observers believe that Tshabangu is a front for President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is seen as hellbent on decimating the CCC’s power base and creating a de-facto one-party state.
Tshabangu has insisted that his actions are above board and are a response to the imposition of election candidates by CCC leader Nelson Chamisa.
The recall of the five CCC senators is the latest in a series of moves by Tshabangu to target the opposition party. Last month, he recalled nine CCC senators and 14 CCC members of the National Assembly.
The CCC has said that it will challenge the recalls in court.
