Chelvey Mine Robbers Receive 12-Year Sentences

A group of six men, ranging in age from 21 to 29, have faced the consequences of their actions after being sentenced to 12 years in prison each for a 2013 robbery at the Chelvey Mine in Matepatepa.

Maxwell Chabvapano, Dyke Dick, Trust and Trymore Mashingaidze, Tinashe Magwegwe, and Paiben Magaya were found guilty by Bindura Magistrate Mr Elisha Singano after a full trial. The prosecution, led by Mr Ziyadhuma Garudzo, presented evidence detailing the men’s plan to rob the mine on November 24th, 2013. Armed with a rifle and pistol, they overpowered security guard Naison Tika, stealing his shotgun and taking two guards hostage.

Their rampage through the mine saw them steal various items, including 230 kilograms of gold carbons, tools, vehicle batteries, and even the security guard’s personal belongings. Using a stolen Isuzu vehicle as their getaway car, they seemed to have gotten away with their crimes.

However, justice prevailed. A year later, in December 2023, detectives acting on a tip managed to apprehend one of the suspects, Arnold Magaso. The recovered stolen Isuzu led them to the remaining accomplices, and Magaso’s cooperation ensured their swift arrest.

While not all the stolen property was recovered, a significant portion valued at US$7,500 was returned. The court deemed the crimes serious, considering the use of violence and the targeted nature of the attack. The 12-year sentences serve as a strong message against such criminal activity and aim to deter future attempts.

This case highlights the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between law enforcement and the justice system in bringing perpetrators to justice. It also emphasizes the importance of remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity to the authorities.
