A 29-year-old man was apprehended by Hatfield neighbourhood watch guards in the early hours of Sunday morning after attempting to steal TelOne copper cables. Erick Matuzhayi was caught red-handed along St Andrews Road at around 2am, carrying a sack filled with insulated cables.
The suspect, who claimed he was promised US$25 for the stolen cables, said he intended to use US$20 for rent and US$5 for his child’s school fees. In an audio recording captured by the guards, Matuzhayi revealed that he was recruited by a man known as “Baba vaNyasha” to carry out the theft.
The neighbourhood watch team, patrolling the area, spotted Matuzhayi lurking in the shadows and quickly moved in. Despite his attempts to flee, the guards chased him down and subdued him after a brief struggle. Residents gathered at the scene as the suspect was handed over to Hatfield Police Station.
This incident is the latest in a series of successful operations by the neighbourhood watch programme, which has been instrumental in curbing crime in the area. Recent weeks have seen several thieves arrested, with some already convicted and others awaiting trial.
The arrest highlights the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in tackling crime. Residents have praised the guards for their swift action, which has brought a sense of security to the neighbourhood.
