A Harare couple accused of defrauding former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Governor Gideon Gono of ZiG137 million has challenged the credibility of the case against them, arguing that the accusations lack solid evidence.
Clark and Beverly Makoni insist that Gono’s claims are based on hearsay, following damning revelations from an auditor, who admitted that she had no primary evidence to support the fraud charges.

The trial resumed last Friday before regional magistrate Stanford Mambanje, where state witness and auditor Lindiwe Sabeka was cross-examined by defence lawyer Admire Rubaya. Sabeka conceded that her audit report lacked essential supporting documents, casting doubt over the foundation of the allegations.
“Individuals involved in compiling the report had no auditing or accounting background,” Sabeka admitted under questioning.
Further scrutiny was placed on Sabeka’s own qualifications, with Rubaya demanding proof that she was certified to conduct the audit.
Despite these revelations, the State maintains that the Makonis fraudulently altered corporate records, allegedly forging a CR14 form to appoint themselves as company directors of Valley Lodge, before approaching ZB Bank in Mutare to change account signatories.
The couple allegedly gained unauthorised access to the company’s financial assets, enabling them to withdraw significant sums from the bank accounts.
With the credibility of the audit now under question, the trial continues, with the defence pressing for further examination of the evidence.
