A major blunder has been exposed in the investigation into Zimbabwe’s largest cash heist, with police naming a deceased man as one of the suspects, according to the Chronicle. Israel Zulu, who was allegedly shot and killed by police in October 2023, has been listed among the seven individuals believed to be involved in the US$4 million robbery of an Ecobank branch in Bulawayo.
The error came to light after a police memo dated October 18, 2023, detailed the circumstances of Zulu’s death. According to the memo, Zulu and another suspect, David Dausi Takawira, were shot during a shootout with police in Harare. Both suspects were taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital but did not survive.
The revelation of Zulu’s death raises serious questions about the thoroughness of the investigation and the accuracy of the information provided to the public. It is unclear how such a significant error could have occurred, and it casts doubt on the credibility of the police investigation.
Despite this setback, police have named five other suspects in connection with the heist: Elijah Vumbunu alias Mupositori, Takafa Vumbunu alias Naison Mahembe, David Sawadye, Israel Zulu, Kudakwashe Mudzingwa alias Umbro, Paul Chinake, and Brian Murape. These individuals are believed to be linked to a string of armed robberies across Zimbabwe.
Police believe that the suspects have already fled the country and are currently operating in South Africa. The Zimbabwean police will be working with Interpol and South African authorities to track them down and bring them to justice.
The heist took place on October 17, 2023, when armed robbers intercepted a cash-in-transit van carrying US$4 million. The robbers overpowered the security guards and made off with the money in a matter of minutes.
The incident has sparked outrage and concern among the public, who are demanding answers and accountability. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen whether the police will be able to apprehend the remaining suspects and recover the stolen money.
