Domboshava Villagers Fight Chinese Quarry Mine Expansion

20,000 villagers in Domboshava face potential displacement as China Aihua Jianye, a Chinese mining firm, moves to establish a quarry mine on 225 hectares of communal land. The company has already fenced off the area – including three small dams – without proper community consultation, sparking fierce resistance from locals who fear losing their homes and livelihoods without compensation.
This marks the second attempt by the company to operate in the area after being stopped by President Mnangagwa in 2019. Villagers, led by Headman Maruza, have petitioned the Goromonzi Rural District Council and are pooling funds for legal action. “They began fencing before consulting us. We reject this project,” Maruza stated.
The council recently advertised the project, giving residents one month to object. However, villagers accuse authorities of sidelining them, with Ward 4 Councillor Tendai Mashingaidze submitting a signed petition against the mine. Legal experts warn the project may violate zoning laws, as the land is designated for communal farming.
“The Chinese admitted their mistake in bypassing consultations, but their equipment is already on-site,” said villager Andrew Mashingaidze. Residents now seek an EMA assessment and a High Court interdict to halt operations, suspecting corruption in the deal.
