Dotito Duo Jailed for Torturing Teen Over Stolen Sugarcane

Two Dotito men have been sentenced to 10 years and 5 months imprisonment by the Mt Darwin Magistrates’ Court for the brutal torture and extortion of a 16-year-old boy and his friends over allegations of stolen sugarcane.
The court heard how Mawaiti Chigwida (41) and Collins Rengwa (32) subjected the teenager to hours of torture chaining him, beating him with a yoke chain, and smearing him with toxic buffalo beans before dousing him in petrol while threatening to set him alight. The assailants then extorted money from the victim’s guardian for his release. Two other minors suffered similar unlawful detention.
The pair were convicted on six counts including assault, unlawful detention and extortion.
