Driver Duped by Traditional Healer in Fake Promotion Ritual, Fined for False Robbery Report
A driver in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, has been fined after admitting to falsely reporting a robbery to cover up money stolen by his traditional healer.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), 51-year-old Bongani Matshazi, employed by Zimsend Bulawayo as a driver responsible for cash deliveries, was entrusted with US$7,000 and ZAR10,000 to deliver to a Plumtree outlet on February 29th, 2024.
However, before his trip, Matshazi allegedly visited his traditional healer, Dr. Musa, who had previously instructed him to bring money for a promotion ritual.
Matshazi reportedly handed over the entire sum (US$7,000 and ZAR10,000) for the ceremony. Dr Musa then wrapped the money in a black cloth and performed the ritual.
Upon returning home to complete the final stage of the ritual, Matshazi discovered the money had been replaced with ZWL$100 notes and paper cuttings. Fearing repercussions, he then filed a false police report claiming he was robbed at Khami Bridge while on his way to Plumtree.
The investigation took a turn when vehicle tracker data revealed Matshazi never stopped at Khami Bridge. Instead, it showed a significant delay at the location where he met Dr. Musa. Faced with this evidence, Matshazi confessed to the scheme.
He was arraigned before the Plumtree Magistrates Court on charges of making a false report to the Police. Matshazi pleaded guilty, avoiding a lengthy trial, and was sentenced to a fine of US$200 or 5 months imprisonment.
