Ex-Police Commissioner, Wife Arrested in Gweru Kidnapping
A former Mashonaland Central high-ranking police officer, Mekia Tanyanyiwa, and his wife Sakhile Tanyanyiwa, have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a two-month-old baby in Gweru, Zimbabwe. The couple is expected to appear in court on Monday.
According to police reports, the 31-year-old mother, Loreen Hungwe, reported her baby missing on March 8 after it was allegedly taken by three women driving a white Toyota Aqua. The investigation led police to Mekia Tanyanyiwa, who owned the vehicle used in the kidnapping. His wife, Sakhile, later surrendered to authorities.
The baby was thankfully located unharmed and safely returned to its mother. The motive behind the kidnapping remains unclear, with both Mekia and Sakhile Tanyanyiwa providing seemingly contradictory statements to police.
This case has garnered significant attention due to the prominent past of Mekia Tanyanyiwa, who previously served as the head of the Police Support Unit before his dismissal in 2018.
