Former Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) combatants, along with widows and children of fallen fighters, have staged a sit-in protest in Chinhoyi, demanding the return of properties allegedly seized by government officials decades ago.
The group, led by Moffat “Commander” Karomo, has spent three nights camped in bitter winter cold on land claimed to belong to Nitram Holdings, a company founded by ex-ZIPRA fighters in 1980 using contributions from their demobilisation payments.

“We are here with the blessings of Vice President Kembo Mohadi, and we are here to take back what was illegally taken from ZIPRA combatants, widows and their children,” Karomo stated.
Karomo insists that President Emmerson Mnangagwa had instructed them to identify their lost properties, allegedly confiscated amid the Gukurahundi atrocities in the 1980s.
“Mnangagwa must show his sincerity now. Since he instructed us to identify our properties, we are doing exactly that.”
The land in Chinhoyi, now part of a private residential development known as Pearview, is just one of the many contested properties. Karomo further claims Nitram Holdings also owns Old Chinhoyi Hotel and Caves Hotel, which are currently under Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) management.
Widows of ex-combatants have also voiced their frustration, citing years of suffering while their inherited wealth remains under government control.
“We are suffering while some crooked people are enjoying our children’s inheritance,” said Cecilia Moyo, widow of a former ZIPRA fighter.
Despite promises made years ago, government authorities have yet to facilitate the return of the confiscated assets. The Nitram Holdings board has accused unnamed influential officials of blocking efforts to repossess their properties.
The ex-combatants vow to remain at the protest site indefinitely, insisting that justice must be served for those who fought for Zimbabwe’s liberation.
