A fire at the Highfield Substation on Sunday night has caused extensive power outages across southern Harare, affecting both residential and industrial areas. Engineers from the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) are working urgently to restore service following damage to critical infrastructure.
The blaze, which occurred on 4 May 2025, severely damaged key components, leading to blackouts in multiple suburbs, including Southerton, Workington, Ardbennie, Willowvale, Rugare, Westwood, Lochnivar, Highfield, parts of Waterfalls, and Mbare. The outage has also impacted ZESA Enterprises and the ZRP Southerton police facility.
In response, ZETDC has rerouted supply to some areas—Workington is temporarily receiving electricity from Kambuzuma Substation, while Willowvale is being powered via Parkridge. However, many locations remain affected, as technicians work tirelessly to replace damaged equipment.
“The inconvenience caused is sincerely regretted,” ZETDC said in a statement issued by its Stakeholder Relations office, assuring residents that updates will be provided as repairs progress.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, though no injuries have been reported. Residents and businesses are urged to exercise caution and plan accordingly as restoration efforts continue.
