Freda Rebecca Gold Mine, owned by Kuvimba Mining House (KMH), has announced plans to commission a 6-megawatt solar power plant by June 2025. This initiative aims to reduce the mine’s reliance on conventional energy sources while lowering its carbon footprint. The project forms part of a larger strategy by KMH to incorporate renewable energy across its mining operations.
The solar plant is expected to meet 30% of the mine’s 20MW energy requirements, thanks to a partnership with an independent power producer. Patrick Maseva-Shayawabaya, the Managing Director of Freda Rebecca Mine, emphasised the importance of the project in achieving a balance between cost-efficiency and environmental sustainability.
“This solar initiative is a game-changer. It not only reduces our energy costs but also aligns with our commitment to a cleaner, greener future,” said Maseva-Shayawabaya.
Promoting Renewable Energy
Trevor Barnard, CEO of Kuvimba Mining House, confirmed that the solar rollout at Freda Rebecca is just the first step in a broader programme to adopt renewable energy across all of the group’s mining sites.
“Freda Rebecca’s solar project is a cornerstone of our long-term strategy. We are determined to integrate renewable energy solutions into all our operations, ensuring a sustainable future,” Barnard stated.
In addition to the solar power project, the mine has launched an environmental rehabilitation campaign titled “Restoring Nature, Securing Tomorrow”. Under this initiative, over 10,000 indigenous trees are being planted around the mine’s Tailings Storage Facility (TSF).
“Environmental preservation is a priority embedded in our daily operations. We’re committed to restoring ecosystems alongside our mining activities,” said Maseva-Shayawabaya.
The solar project is anticipated to be fully operational within two years, marking a significant advancement in the mining sector’s transition to environmentally friendly practices in Zimbabwe.
