Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has called for stricter enforcement of immigration laws, stating that the period of leniency toward undocumented foreign nationals in South Africa must come to an end.
Speaking at the ANC Gauteng lekgotla in Fourways on Saturday, Lesufi highlighted concerns over public service pressures, particularly in healthcare and law enforcement, linking them to undocumented migration.
During a visit to Marry Me informal settlement in Soshanguve, Lesufi observed that over 65% of residents lacked official documentation, stressing:
“We can’t have an informal settlement where over 65% of its citizens are undocumented foreign citizens. It must come to an end.”
Lesufi further asserted that undocumented individuals should be formally registered or leave, adding:
“That period of honeymoon must come to an end. You [must] document yourself or you [must] leave us in peace.”
His remarks suggest that undocumented migration may be contributing to crime rates, urging for better systems to regulate foreign nationals in South Africa.
Lesufi revealed that he had raised the issue with President Cyril Ramaphosa, stressing that hospitals are overwhelmed and South Africans are expected to present identification for treatment, while undocumented foreigners bypass such protocols.
