The Zimbabwean government has started compensating 301 farmers from Mashonaland West and Central whose land was acquired for the development of the new Mt Hampden City. Five farmers have already received full payments, with the remaining compensations expected in coming months, according to Lands Ministry Permanent Secretary Professor Obert Jiri.
The affected farmers owned 47 farms covering 15,500 hectares land earmarked for a metropolis projected to house 1.5 million residents. Compensation follows two models: full payment for titled landowners and reimbursement for improvements made by resettled farmers. The process prioritised those displaced for last year’s SADC Summit infrastructure.
An inter-ministerial committee is overseeing the relocation of 300 families to facilitate the decade-long city development. The project, approved by Cabinet in 2018, will unfold in four phases funded through Treasury allocations, PPPs, and foreign investment. Dubai’s Mulk International Group has already begun constructing a US$500 million cyber city component.
“The land transfer is complete, and development commenced years ago,” confirmed Dr Shingirayi Mushamba from Local Government Ministry. The new city – to be administered by Harare, Mazowe and Zvimba councils – aims to decongest Harare’s CBD while creating modern residential and industrial zones.
