In a move to tackle staff shortages in schools, particularly those in rural areas, the Zimbabwean government has announced plans to recruit 8,000 teachers by the end of the year. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Professor Amon Murwira confirmed the decision while addressing Parliament on behalf of the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education.

Professor Murwira highlighted the government’s commitment to providing quality education but acknowledged that financial limitations, rather than a lack of trained educators, have delayed recruitment. “This year alone, 8,000 teachers have been authorised for recruitment as part of our long-term strategy to ensure every school has access to well-trained educators,” he stated.

The recruitment drive aims to address critical gaps in subjects such as Mathematics, Science, and Geography, which have left schools struggling to adequately prepare students for examinations. Concerns were raised in Parliament, with legislators like Desire Nkala urging the government to implement short-term measures to assist students sitting for O-Level and A-Level exams this year.

In response, Professor Murwira appealed for patience, assuring Parliament that efforts to collaborate with the Treasury and Public Service Commission would provide sustainable solutions in the long term. “We understand the urgency of this matter and are working tirelessly to address the crisis,” he added.

This initiative reflects the government’s recognition of the importance of education as a foundation for Zimbabwe’s development and the urgency to resolve challenges facing rural schools.
