Five armed assailants stormed the Karoi Town Council offices tying up security personnel and ransacking the premises. The masked robbers, equipped with a pistol, launched their attack at around 3:00am, although no cash was stolen during the incident.
According to Mashonaland West Police Spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, the attackers assaulted two security guards on duty before restraining them with shoelaces and charger cables.
“The suspects broke into the licensing office and confined the security guards in one of the rooms,” Inspector Kohwera explained. He added that the gang used explosives to blast open a safe in the office, only to find that all funds had already been banked.
The robbers also forced entry into other offices but left without taking anything, apart from one of the guards’ Vivo mobile phone. After the assailants fled, the tied-up guards managed to call for help, alerting a nearby security officer at Agribank, who informed the police. Officers attended the scene, and investigations are ongoing.
Inspector Kohwera praised the Karoi Town Council for adhering to best practices by not keeping large sums of cash in their safes, thereby preventing further losses. “We implore institutions and individuals to bank their money regularly to avoid becoming targets for robbers,” he said. Kohwera also urged anyone with information on the crime to report it to their nearest police station.
The attempted robbery comes just two months after a similar heist at the Municipality of Chinhoyi, where gunmen made off with US$16,000 in cash.
