Hailstorm Closes Farm School
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has suspended lessons at Hermiston Primary School in Glendale Ward 23 after last night ( Monday) rains blew off all classrooms’ roofs.
According to the school head Mudzora Steven, the area experienced a heavy hailstorm Monday night for a solid 30m minutes uprooting trees in the process.
The hailstorm left the school classroom windows shattered, furniture broken and books drenched in pools of water.
“We are appealing for tents so that we can resume lessons. We have since stopped lessons because there is literally nowhere to gather pupils,” Mudzora said.
He said the damaged property is valued at tens of thousands of dollars.
According to sources, there are many places across the province affected by the hailstorm.
The hailstorm also destroyed a number of houses at Hermiston and Heyshot Farm in the same ward.
Lovemore Baranda who resides in Hemiston Farm had his house destroyed to the foundation.
Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs Captain (Rtd) Christopher Magomo is currently visiting all affected areas accompanied by Mr Timothy Maregere, the provincial permanent secretary, Mr Levi Katambarare, Director for Economic Affairs and Investment and Mr. Aaron Mazingaiso the chairperson of the provincial Civil Protection Unit.
After the visit, the minister through the Civil Protection Unit expects to provide the required assistance to the affected school and families including tents, food and blankets.
