Harare CBD Balcony Collapse: One Dead, Six Injured

A tragic incident unfolded in Harare’s central business district (CBD) yesterday when a balcony on a dilapidated building at the intersection of Chinhoyi Street and Bank Street collapsed. The collapse resulted in the death of a young woman and injuries to six others.

The incident occurred shortly after heavy rainfall in the capital city. National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the event and revealed that law enforcement is currently investigating the case.

“We can confirm the death of one individual following the collapse of a building in the CBD,” Assistant Commissioner Nyathi stated. “Additionally, six people sustained injuries. Two are in critical condition and have been admitted to the hospital. We will release a comprehensive statement after notifying the next of kin of those involved.”

Concerns have been raised regarding the lack of maintenance on the building, potentially compromising its structural integrity. Witness Prosper Murengami, who sustained minor injuries while attempting to assist victims, believes the recent rainfall may have weakened the already deteriorating structure.

“It happened all of a sudden, just as everyone was seeking shelter from the rain,” Mr. Murengami recounted.

Another unnamed witness described the horrific scene of the woman’s death.

“The collapse trapped the woman who was walking with her companion,” he said. “Despite bystanders’ valiant efforts to rescue her, she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries.”

The male companion of the deceased woman was also among those injured in the collapse.
