After 71 days in pre-trial detention, journalist Blessed Mhlanga has finally been released on US$500 bail, following a ruling by High Court Judge Gibson Mandaza on Tuesday, 6 May 2025.
Mhlanga, a reporter for HStv, was arrested on 24 February on charges of inciting violence, after allegedly broadcasting a video statement by war veteran Blessed Geza, in which he called for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s immediate resignation.
Despite two previous bail denials, Justice Mandaza overturned the earlier decisions, stating:
“After hearing submissions by both counsel, this court is of the view that the appellant is entitled to bail.”
Mhlanga has been ordered to reside at his given address, report to CID Law and Order every Friday, surrender his passport, and avoid interfering with witnesses until the matter is resolved.
His detention drew international condemnation, with activists in London announcing protests targeting First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa during her upcoming visit to the UK in June.
