Harare, Zimbabwe – Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) journalist Blessed Mhlanga has been denied bail on charges of transmitting information inciting violence or causing damage to property. The decision, handed down by Harare Magistrate Farai Gwatima, stems from interviews Mhlanga conducted with war veteran Blessed Geza, a vocal critic of the Mnangagwa 2030 agenda.

Mhlanga’s arrest followed allegations that his reporting incited unrest. Police are currently seeking Geza on charges of incitement, undermining presidential authority, and theft.

Magistrate Gwatima sided with the state’s argument that Mhlanga’s release would likely lead to witness interference. “The disseminated message will incite violence,” the magistrate stated, adding that Mhlanga’s release would “put the nation in unrest and undermine peace and security.”

The court emphasised that while bail is a constitutional right, it can be denied when compelling reasons exist. “It is not that [Mhlanga] gathered and disseminated information, but the information he gathered was intended to incite public violence,” Gwatima clarified.

The magistrate highlighted the need to balance the accused’s rights with the potential harm to the administration of justice. He pointed to the risk of witness tampering, citing that some witnesses were still active, and concluded that Mhlanga’s release would “jeopardise investigations.”

The defence’s arguments for bail, including Mhlanga’s professional standing, were ultimately rejected.
