Blessed Mhlanga, head of HSTv—an online broadcasting arm of Alpha Media Holdings (AMH), has been detained after handing himself over at Harare Central Police Station this morning. Mhlanga faces a charge of publishing material likely to incite public violence.
AMH publishes The Standard, NewsDay, Zimbabwe Independent, and Southern Eye.
Mhlanga, accompanied by his lawyer Chris Mhike, surrendered to the police after being summoned last week. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
Mhlanga is accused of broadcasting an interview in which outspoken war veterans’ leader and ZANU PF central committee member, Blessed Geza, called for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to step down.
Police have also indicated their intention to arrest Geza for his statements, among other charges. Analysts suggest that these charges are an attempt to silence him. Geza leads a faction of war veterans and ZANU PF supporters opposed to extending Mnangagwa’s term of office to 2030.
