Kapembere Primary Closed After Cholera Scare
Two succumb to Cholera in Bindura
The Ministry of Health and Child Care has closed Kapembere Primary School in Centenary due to a Cholera scare.
Dr. Cremence Tshuma, Mashonaland Central Medical Director said the school has inadequate toilets and a source of running water close by, which has resulted in the school recording alarming suspected Cholera cases.
Dr. Tshuma said the school had become the source of Cholera within its catchment area with pupils taking the disease into the community. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health is not tiring in its call to institutions including schools and colleges to have running water points where people can wash their hands at any given time.
Mashonaland Central continues to record Cholera cases ever since February 2023 despite multiple sectors across the community’s efforts to eradicate the scourge.
On Saturday, the province recorded 22 new cases to leave the province at 3151 cases ever since March 2023. Cumulatively, around 103 deaths associated with Cholera have also been recorded across the province over the same period.
Two of the deaths were recorded on Saturday, at Chiriseri Clinic in Bindura. Bindura district has recorded 467 suspected cases ever since March with 14 deaths and 14 others under treatment.
Mazowe is towering over all other districts with 831 cases, 16 deaths and two under treatment. Centenary comes second after Mazowe with 601 reported cases, but first in terms of deaths.
The district has so far buried 26 Cholera victims. Mbire has recorded 467 while Mt Darwin, Rushinga and Shamva have a combined 700 cases and 46 deaths.
Speaking during a provincial development committee meeting in Bindura early last week, Dr Tshuma emphasised the need to wash hands every time after visiting the toilets and handshakes.
He also recommended that people avoid mass gatherings while condoning backyard restaurants. He also called for the sinking of more water points within institutions, business centres and communities.
