A 50-year-old Kariba man, Jonathan Nyemba, was killed by an elephant on 3 May 2025 while collecting fishing worms near the Nyamasoka River. This tragic incident marks the latest in a series of fatal human-wildlife conflicts plaguing the lakeside community.
Nyemba and his friend, Pension Chimbolela (52), were resting after gathering firewood when a bull elephant suddenly charged at them. While Chimbolela escaped, Nyemba was trampled, sustaining fatal injuries to his right thigh and left arm. His body was discovered hours later after an extensive search by family and authorities.
This comes just a week after two fishermen James Mundane and Emmanuel Maketo drowned in Lake Kariba when a hippo capsized their boat. Tragically, one victim was then attacked by crocodiles while attempting to swim to safety.
