The office of King Bulelani Lobengula kaMzilikazi, the self-proclaimed Ndebele King, has issued a formal response clarifying the purpose of his visit to Bulawayo, following remarks made by Zimbabwean government officials.
King Bulelani, a descendant of King Lobengula and King Mzilikazi, travelled from South Africa for what his office described as a “private and dignified cultural pilgrimage” to the historic city. His itinerary included a courtesy visit to Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart.
However, comments by Minister of Local Government Daniel Garwe and ZANU PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa have sparked concerns, leading the King’s representatives to stress the cultural rather than political significance of his visit.
“His Majesty’s role is not political but restorative, cultural, and symbolic. It is aimed at uniting Mthwakazi descendants across Southern Africa and the diaspora through heritage, identity, and community development,” read a statement from his office.
His team also dismissed suggestions of a possible arrest, arguing that such threats contradict Ubuntu and Pan-African ideals. They emphasised that traditional leaders should be respected as custodians of heritage rather than perceived as political adversaries.
The statement further expressed commitment to peace, dialogue, and cultural preservation, advocating for traditional institutions to work alongside state structures in fostering unity, community development, and cultural tourism.
Supporters of the King’s visit hailed it as an important step in reaffirming Ndebele heritage, with his office concluding:
“Inkosi YiNkosi Ngabantu – A King is a King because of the people.”
