Zimbabwe’s sporting icon Kirsty Coventry received a hero’s welcome upon her return to Harare on Sunday, following her historic election as the first female and African president of the International Olympics Committee (IOC). Coventry, 41, made history last week after securing a landslide victory at the IOC session in Greece, becoming the youngest person ever to hold the prestigious position.
Hundreds of supporters, alongside government officials, gathered at Robert Mugabe International Airport to celebrate Coventry’s achievement. Among the dignitaries were Monica Mutsvangwa, Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises; Tatenda Mavetera, Minister of Information Communications Technology; and Emily Jesaya, Deputy Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture.
Coventry’s return marks a significant moment for Zimbabwe, as she prepares to officially resign from her role as Minister of Sport and bid farewell to President Emmerson Mnangagwa before relocating to Lausanne, Switzerland, where the IOC headquarters are located.
In her brief address to the crowd, Coventry expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support. “This victory is not just mine; it belongs to every Zimbabwean who has supported me throughout my journey. I am honoured to represent our nation on such a global stage,” she said.
Coventry’s election is a milestone for Africa and women in sports leadership. Her career as a seven-time Olympic medallist in swimming and her subsequent contributions to sports administration have earned her widespread respect and admiration.
Gerald Mlotshwa, Chairperson of the Sports and Recreation Commission, praised Coventry’s achievement. “Kirsty’s election is a testament to her dedication and excellence. She has put Zimbabwe on the map, and we are incredibly proud of her,” he said.
As Coventry transitions to her new role, her focus will be on driving the IOC’s mission to promote sports globally, foster inclusivity, and support athletes worldwide. Her leadership is expected to bring fresh perspectives to the organisation, particularly in advancing gender equality and youth engagement in sports.
