The introduction of low-cost boarding schools in Mashonaland Central has significantly improved academic performance, particularly in marginalised districts. These facilities have alleviated challenges such as long distances to school, flooding, and human-wildlife conflicts, which previously disrupted learning for many rural pupils.
According to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the number of schools with a zero percent pass rate in secondary examinations has dropped from 52 in 2023 to 16 in the latest results. Similarly, primary schools with a zero percent pass rate at Grade 7 decreased from 11 to eight during the same period.
Provincial Education Director Dr Themba Mangwiro highlighted the measures being taken to sustain this progress. “We have ensured that no school is left without teachers. We are deploying adequate staff, preferably from the province, to reduce attrition,” he said. Teachers from other regions often resist staying in remote areas like Mbire, Muzarabani, and Rushinga.
In addition to staffing, schools are being provided with past examination papers to familiarise students with exam formats. Inspectors have also been deployed to monitor teaching quality and offer support where needed. Parents are being actively engaged to support their children’s education, while schools are encouraged to collaborate at the cluster level.
Despite these improvements, challenges remain. Many underperforming schools are satellite institutions lacking proper infrastructure, sufficient textbooks, and qualified leadership. In districts like Muzarabani and Mbire, students often travel long distances to school, and flooding during the rainy season further disrupts learning. Non-payment of school fees by parents or guardians also impacts performance.
To address these issues, low-cost boarding facilities have been established at several schools, including Jiti High School in Shamva, Chifamba High School in Guruve, and Muzarabani High School. These facilities have not only improved attendance but also created a more conducive learning environment.
