One person was found dead at the defunct Jumbo Mine’s SOS panning site in Mazowe, Zimbabwe on Sunday, March 31st, following a violent clash between rival artisanal gold miner gangs.
The deceased, identified as Kennias Mudzamiri, was discovered in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds and machete lacerations.
This latest incident highlights the ongoing issue of machete gang violence within Zimbabwe’s artisanal mining sector.
Brutal Fight Erupts at Mine Site
According to Assistant Inspector Tonny Nyandoro, deputy spokesperson for ZRP Mashonaland Central, Mudzamiri arrived at Pit 84 of Jumbo Mine around 10:00 pm on March 31st, accompanied by a group wielding dangerous weapons including catapults, knives, machetes, and iron rods.
The gang launched an attack on miners waiting their turn to enter the pit, sparking a violent altercation.
“The attacked miners retaliated and attacked Kennias who fell into a shaft,” Nyandoro explained. “He was only discovered by police when they were called to the scene.”
Police Vow to Crack Down on Gang Violence
The resurgence of machete gangs has deeply troubled authorities, with Nyandoro issuing a stern warning to perpetrators.
“Police officers are firm on the ground and ready to deal with these machete gangs,” he declared.
He urged the public to avoid violence and prioritize the sanctity of life. “People should report all criminal cases to their nearest police establishment,” Nyandoro emphasized.
