A 38-year-old man, Luckmore Mazambani, has been sentenced to 111 years in prison by the Bindura Regional Magistrates’ Court for a series of violent crimes, including rape and robbery, committed in the Mt Darwin and Madziwa areas of Mashonaland Central.
Mazambani, from Chakondora Village under Chief Madziwa, was convicted on six counts of rape and three counts of robbery.
The court heard that between January and December 2023, he targeted women in isolated homes, often breaking in at night armed with machetes or axe handles. He would rob his victims of cash, mobile phones, food, and other belongings before sexually assaulting them.
“The accused exhibited a pattern of extreme violence, leaving his victims traumatised and vulnerable,” said the NPA in a statement.
Mazambani received 15 years for each rape charge and 12 years for each robbery charge, totalling 111 years.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe justified the sentence, stating it reflects the gravity of the crimes and underscores the justice system’s commitment to combating violence.
Mashonaland Central is one of the provinces with high rates gender based violence and sexual crimes.
